When Universal announced Epic Universe, I knew we had to go.
As a family that loves theme parks, Harry Potter, and trying new experiences, it quickly jumped to the top of our travel list. We visited as part of a multi-generational trip that included grandparents, toddlers, and adults with very different interests.
After spending time in the park, I can confidently say this:
Epic Universe is incredible, but it is very different from Disney and the other Universal parks.
If you’re planning a family trip, especially with young children, here are the things I wish someone had told me before we went.
1. The Walking Is No Joke
I thought Disney’s walking was a lot.
Epic Universe somehow feels bigger.
The park is designed around a central hub with portals leading into each themed land. It looks beautiful, but it also means you’re constantly walking back through the center of the park to reach another area.
If you’re visiting with toddlers, bring the stroller. Even if your child rarely uses one at home.
My daughter is normally active and loves walking, but by mid-afternoon she was more than happy to ride. My son spent much of the day alternating between the stroller and a baby carrier.
A stroller with good tires, a stroller fan, and plenty of storage made a huge difference.
2. The Worlds Feel Like Separate Theme Parks
One of the coolest things about Epic Universe is how immersive each land feels.
When you walk through a portal, it genuinely feels like you’ve entered a completely different world.
Our family’s favorites were:
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic
- Super Nintendo World
- How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk
Each area has its own atmosphere, food, music, characters, and attractions. The attention to detail is incredible.
My biggest advice?
Don’t rush.
Many families try to see every portal in one day. We found ourselves enjoying the experience much more when we slowed down and explored.
3. How to Train Your Dragon Is the Surprise Family Winner
Before our trip, I assumed Harry Potter would be my favorite.
I was wrong.
The entire How to Train Your Dragon land was absolutely stunning.
The land feels alive.
The architecture is beautiful. The views are incredible. The characters are fun. The atmosphere is energetic without feeling overwhelming.
Even family members who weren’t huge Dragon fans walked away saying it was one of their favorite areas.
If you’re traveling with younger kids, plan more time here than you think you’ll need.
4. Nintendo Fans Could Spend an Entire Day Here
If your kids love Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, or Donkey Kong, prepare yourself.
The moment you enter Super Nintendo World, sensory overload hits in the best possible way.
Everything moves.
Coins spin.
Characters interact.
Sounds come from every direction.
The land feels like someone turned a video game into real life.
Kids who love Nintendo could easily spend half a day or more exploring the interactive elements alone.
5. The Heat Feels Hotter Than Disney
Maybe it was the timing of our trip.
Maybe it was the amount of exposed walkways.
Maybe it was because we had a stroller, diaper bag, and baby gear.
Whatever the reason, Epic Universe felt hotter than some of our Disney days.
Plan accordingly:
- Cooling towels
- Refillable water bottles
- Portable fans
- Frequent indoor breaks
- Midday meals in air conditioning
If you’re visiting in summer, don’t underestimate the Florida heat.
6. There Is Less “Sit and Rest” Entertainment
One thing Disney does exceptionally well is providing indoor attractions where you can cool off and recharge.
Think Philharmagic, Hall of Presidents, Carousel of Progress, and similar experiences.
Epic Universe has fewer opportunities to simply sit in air conditioning for twenty minutes.
That means you’ll need to intentionally build rest breaks into your day.
Families with babies and toddlers should expect to take more breaks than they might at Disney.
7. Interactive Experiences Are Worth It
If your family enjoys immersive experiences, budget for at least one interactive item.
For Harry Potter fans, that may be an interactive wand.
For Nintendo fans, it could be a Power-Up Band.
These aren’t necessities.
But they significantly increase how much there is to do throughout the lands.
Watching kids discover hidden effects and secret interactions became part of the experience itself.
8. You Don’t Have to Ride Everything
One mistake many families make is trying to maximize ride count.
Epic Universe is one of the few parks where simply existing in the themed lands is enjoyable.
Some of our favorite memories weren’t rides at all.
They were:
- Watching the details in the lands
- Meeting characters
- Exploring shops
- Trying themed snacks
- Taking photos
- Letting the kids simply experience the environment
Especially with young children, don’t judge your day by how many attractions you completed.
Judge it by how much fun your family had.
9. Consider Multiple Days
This might be my biggest takeaway.
If Epic Universe is the primary reason for your trip, consider spending more than one day there.
Trying to experience every land, attraction, show, meal, and interactive activity in a single day can feel rushed.
A second day allows you to revisit favorite areas, slow down, and enjoy the details that make Epic Universe special.
Final Thoughts
Epic Universe exceeded our expectations.
It’s beautiful, immersive, ambitious, and unlike any theme park we’ve experienced before.
For families, especially those traveling with younger children, the key is adjusting expectations.
Bring the stroller.
Take breaks.
Stay hydrated.
Slow down.
And remember that some of the best memories won’t come from the biggest ride. They’ll come from watching your kids walk through a portal and truly believe they’ve stepped into another world.
