I’ve taken enough cruises to know that the best packing lists aren’t the ones with 100 items you’ll never touch. They’re the lists built from experience—the things that solve problems before they become problems.
Some of these items I’ve packed for years. Others were purchased after one cruise where I found myself saying, “Never again.” Together, they’ve earned a permanent spot in my cruise packing bin because they make our vacations smoother, more comfortable, and a whole lot less stressful.
Whether you’re sailing for the first time or you’re a seasoned cruiser, these are the 25 cruise items I pack every time—and actually use.

1. Flat-Shelf Over-the-Door Organizer
Most cruise influencers recommend the pocket-style over-the-door organizers, but I’ve never been a fan of them. I always found myself digging through pockets trying to remember where I put sunscreen, chargers, medications, or my daughter’s hair ties.
Instead, I use a flat-shelf organizer that hangs over the bathroom door and closet. It essentially creates extra shelving in a room that has almost none. Before kids, it was great for keeping my toiletries organized. Now that I’m traveling with toddlers, I can dedicate an entire shelf to diapers and wipes, another to bottles and snacks, and another to toys and miscellaneous items that would otherwise end up scattered around the cabin.

2. Portable Cabin Fan
I’m one of those people who can’t sleep if a room feels stuffy. Cruise cabins aren’t always hot, but they can definitely feel stagnant, especially at night. After one particularly uncomfortable cruise where I spent the week kicking blankets on and off, I started packing a small rechargeable fan.
The fan gives just enough airflow to make the room feel cooler and more comfortable without taking up much luggage space. As a bonus, the gentle hum provides a little bit of white noise, which helps drown out hallway conversations and those late-night cabin door slams.
This is the travel fan that now permanently lives in my cruise packing bin.
3. Insulated Drink Tumbler
Cruise ships always have drinks available, but the cups are tiny. I got tired of making constant trips back for water, iced tea, or coffee, especially when I was spending the afternoon by the pool or watching my kids play in the splash pad.
An insulated tumbler keeps drinks cold for hours and makes it much easier to stay hydrated throughout the day. It’s one of those items that doesn’t seem necessary until you’ve used it for an entire cruise.

4. Kindle
Cruises are one of the few vacations where I actually make time to read.
Whether I’m sitting on the balcony while the kids nap, enjoying a quiet sea day, or winding down before bed, I always find myself reaching for my Kindle. It holds hundreds of books while taking up less space than a single paperback.
I used to pack two or three books and hope I’d picked the right ones. Now I simply bring my Kindle and have endless options.

6. Portable Sound Machine/Night Light
I originally bought this for my kids. Now I’d pack it even if I were cruising without them.
Cruise hallways can be surprisingly noisy, especially near elevators. Between late-night conversations, kids running down the hallway, and cabin doors closing, there can be more background noise than you’d expect.
The sound machine helps block most of that out, while the night light keeps me from walking into furniture when I inevitably wake up in the middle of the night.
This is the one we bring on every cruise. It holds its own battery so it can charge during the day while we’re out and run all night.
7. Pillow Mist
Vacation should feel relaxing, and this is one of those little luxuries that helps create that feeling.
A few sprays on the pillows before bed instantly make the cabin feel more comfortable and hotel-like. It’s a small thing, but after a busy day in port, it feels like a treat.

8. Packing Cubes
Packing cubes changed the way I pack.
Instead of digging through a suitcase looking for a specific outfit, everything has its own place. Each family member gets their own cube, and unpacking takes just a few minutes.
I also use one cube for dirty clothes during the cruise, which makes repacking at the end of the trip much easier.

9. Carry-On Bag/Suitcase
If you’ve cruised before, you know your checked luggage may not show up until later in the afternoon.
That’s why I always board with a carry-on containing swimsuits, medications, sunscreen, chargers, and a change of clothes. It allows us to start enjoying the ship immediately instead of waiting around for luggage delivery.

10. Magnetic Hooks
One of the best cruise hacks is that most cabin walls are magnetic.
I use magnetic hooks for hats, backpacks, lanyards, swimsuits, and jackets. They instantly create extra storage space without taking up any room.

11. Motion Sickness Bands
Even people who cruise regularly can occasionally experience rough seas.
I like having motion sickness bands because they’re drug-free, reusable, and easy to throw in a day bag just in case.
These are the bands I keep packed for every sailing. I usually don’t use them, but they were great on the cruise we took when I was pregnant and I didn’t want to take medication.
12. Poo-Pourri Toilet Spray
There’s no elegant way to say this… cruise bathrooms are small. Really small. When you’re sharing a cabin with two, three, or even four people, a small bottle of Poo-Pourri can be a marriage saver. It takes up almost no room in your toiletry bag and makes those tiny bathrooms much more pleasant for everyone onboard.
This little bottle has become a permanent addition to my cruise toiletries, and honestly, I’d never sail without it again.

13. Travel First Aid Kit
Every trip seems to involve at least one minor injury, blister, headache, or unexpected scrape.
Having a small first aid kit means I can handle those little situations quickly without having to search the ship for supplies.
This compact kit is the one I recommend. Everything is labeled and easy to get to.
14. Scented Diaper Disposal Bags
This might be the most underrated item on my entire list.
Yes, they’re marketed for diapers. But even if you don’t have children, cruise cabin trash cans can develop odors over the course of a week. We use these for diapers, wet swimsuits, leftover food, and anything else we’d rather not smell.
If you’re staying in an interior or ocean view cabin without a balcony, these become even more valuable.

15. Travel Pharmacy Kit
I don’t want to spend my vacation hunting down pain relievers or allergy medication.
I keep a small travel pharmacy stocked with headache medicine, stomach medicine, allergy relief, cold medicine, and a few other essentials.
It takes up very little space and has saved us more than once.
My travel pharmacy kit is great because it’s all labeled and small enough to fit into my first aid kit.
16. Portable Charger
Your phone becomes your camera, daily planner, and communication device onboard.
A portable charger gives me peace of mind during long excursion days when I know I’ll be taking lots of photos.

17. AirTag Luggage Tracker
I didn’t think I needed AirTags until I started traveling with kids.
Now I put them in suitcases, backpacks, strollers, and sometimes even favorite stuffed animals. Being able to quickly locate your belongings is incredibly reassuring during travel days.

18. Waterproof Phone Pouch
Beach days, pools, water parks, and private islands all have one thing in common—water and phones don’t mix.
A waterproof pouch lets me take photos without constantly worrying about damaging my phone.

19. Shower Steamers
There’s something about stepping into a hot shower after a long day in port. Whether you’ve spent the day exploring, lounging on the beach, or chasing your kids around the splash pad, those few quiet minutes can feel like a spa treatment.
I started packing shower steamers because I wanted to make the cabin feel a little more relaxing. They’re essentially bath bombs for the shower, releasing calming scents like eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint as the steam builds. It’s a small luxury that takes up almost no room in your suitcase but makes winding down at the end of the day feel extra special.
If you’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday cruise, or simply want to elevate your vacation a little, I highly recommend tossing a few of these in your toiletry bag. The lemongrass mint is also helpful for nausea and stuffy noses.
20. Cord & Electronics Organizer
I got tired of cables floating around the bottom of my suitcase.
Now everything stays together in one small organizer, making it easy to find exactly what I need.

21. Laundry Detergent Sheets
Sometimes a swimsuit, toddler outfit, or favorite shirt needs a quick wash during the cruise.
Laundry detergent sheets take up almost no space and make sink laundry surprisingly easy.
These are the detergent sheets I pack. This brand is completely dissolvable and works great on stains when used quickly.
22. Hanging Shower Organizer
Cruise bathrooms aren’t known for their storage space.
A hanging shower organizer keeps toiletries organized and off the limited counter space available.
This is the one our family uses, it suctions to the walls in the shower or the mirror for additional storage.
23. Magnetic Dry-Erase Board
With multiple family members coming and going throughout the day, this has become a surprisingly useful item.
We use it to write reminders, excursion times, and notes for each other.

24. Cabin Door Magnets
Every cruise hallway looks exactly the same after a few days.
A simple magnet makes it easier to spot your cabin from a distance and adds a little personality to your door.
While we’ve stopped fully decorating our door with magnets, these are my favorite cruise door magnets and I get a new one for each kid.
25. Collapsible Hamper
By the end of a cruise, dirty laundry has a way of taking over the cabin.
A collapsible hamper keeps everything contained and folds flat when it’s time to pack for home.

Could you cruise without these items? Absolutely.
